Transit Facts and Figures The information I have put together is not guaranteed to be accurate, it's based on what I could find at the time and generally is specific to the mk8 Transit AWD. I hope its useful for other owners. Updated 09/10/2025 MT82 6 speed gearbox and diff/transfer box assembly. There seems to be continued confusion over the types of AWD system used on the Mk8 Transit.
I'm no Guru, I've only owned one Transit and only know for certain, what applies to my 2020 vehicle, but I have been digging. If any of my assumptions are wrong, please dive in and correct me. There are 3 very different types of AWD system I want to describe: A). The early 2014 onward Mk8 transmission (Europe). B). The 2016 onward transmission (Europe). C). The USA Transmission 2020 onward. See attached pictures for each Type. Type A, the early type used in Europe: ![]() These units were fitted from the Mk8 launch date in 2014 and mated to the 2.2L engine (Chains). It has two cone shapes moulded into the front casing. These are either twin clutches or a diff one side and the engaging clutch the other, for bringing in the FWD. I'm not sure which as I don't own this type. The Pump/Sensor/Reservoir are all mounted on the Right side cone. (All orientation as viewed from drivers seat). Front and Rear axles are both open diffs, augmented by traction control to brake a spinning wheel and transfer torque to the other wheel on each axle. Starts in rear drive and front brought in when selected? I'm guessing hear so if anyone knows, help me out. Type B, from Sept 2016 Build dates: ![]() Used in Europe and mated to the 2.0L EcoBlue engine (Wet Belt). This system has a single disc shape on the Left side, which is a combined engagement clutch and diff. The Pump/Sensor/Reservoir are mounted on this Left side as well. It has two electronic selection modes. "Normal" which starts in RWD like the early type and when slippage is detected the FWD is brought in automatically. In this mode, the traction control braking for a spinning wheel is also engaged automatically. "Mud/Ruts" mode is engaged by pressing a button on the dash. This engages the front axle as well, but traction control is turned off. There is just the open diff on front and rear axles, no LSD is fitted to either. At a later date, around late 2021/early 2022 multiple modes to suit various driving conditions, developed for the USA system, were introduced to the European market. For both type A and type B Mk8 Transmissions: The MT82 6 speed gearbox part of the Transmission, used on both A and B types, was first used in 2011 on the Ford Mustang. All Mk8 Transits used 5th Generation Haldex Pumps #2274601 Also known under • BK3V4C019AB • BK3V-4C109-AB • EJ32-4C019-AA/EJ324C019AA • SP03155 • DS119088 • 119088 Type C from 2020 in the USA market: The American market is different to Europe, they expect a V6 or V8 engine with 300+ BHP. My feeling is that the European transmission wouldn't handle the horse power, so they started from scratch and designed a system using some parts from their extensive and powerful pick up models. The output is taken from the rear of the gearbox, similar to a Ranger pick up, but taken to the right side of the box, on the Ranger it goes to the Left side. There is a transfer case attached with a pump/clutch and output for rear and front external Prop shafts. ![]() ![]() In the picture you can see the short Prop shaft, connected to the completely separate axle tube and front diff. They used the software developed for the European vans, but added additional modes, like "Slippery" and "Tow/Haul" for different driving conditions. These additional modes were later implemented on the European vans. This system also has open diffs front and back augmented by traction control, depending on the mode selected. There were factory options available, to have a mechanical rear LSD or Locking rear diff included in the build. I hope this helps folks grasp the differences between the early/Later European transmissions. Also that the system built across the pond is a very different animal. Apologies if I have the functionality of the early type A incorrect? |
